How it works

Five steps from your research to an international judging panel.

1

Find your material

Your research must feature a material that Goodfellow supplies. It can have come from any supplier. Search the catalogue to find its name or product code.

2

Prepare your poster

Present your research as a single poster in English, with an abstract of up to 250 words.

3

Submit your entry

Complete the form on this page using your institutional email address, and upload your poster as a PDF by Friday 18 December 2026.

4

Send a 2-minute video

Entries are shortlisted on merit as they arrive. If yours is shortlisted, we will ask you for a 2-minute video explaining your poster and your institution's contact details, by 18 December 2026.

5

Present as a finalist

Up to 10 finalists give a 15-minute online presentation to the judges in January 2027. Winners are announced during British Science Week.

Finalists also give contact details for their head of department and their institution's procurement or finance contact, and complete a written End User Statement.

Prizes

Prizes are Goodfellow material credit, awarded to the winning entrant's Institution, for the benefit of their department or research group. Winners are announced during British Science Week in March 2027.

Second place

Third place

in Goodfellow material credit

All finalists receive a finalist certificate and digital badge. The winning department is invited to host a talk by Goodfellow for its students within 12 months.

Prizes are awarded to the winner's Institution, for the benefit of its department or research group, not the individual, and are used under the institution's own rules. Credit can be spent across the Goodfellow range, excluding export-controlled items, dangerous goods and precious metals unless Goodfellow agrees otherwise, and is subject to sanctions, export-control and other compliance checks and approval. Credit must be ordered within 12 months of winner notification; unused credit lapses. Credit covers the goods and standard delivery on all orders over £500 or the local currency equivalent; orders under this threshold will be subject to a delivery fee. Import duties, VAT or sales tax and other local taxes are the institution's responsibility, and the institution acts as importer of record. Goods are delivered only to the institution's own premises. Prizes have no cash value and cannot be exchanged, transferred, re-exported or resold, and no refund or credit note is paid in cash. Full terms and conditions apply.

Who can enter

The Awards are open to PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, research students and other early-career researchers at a university or publicly funded research institution, in any area of materials research. Master's students undertaking experimental research may also enter. Entrants must be 18 or over.

Entries are accepted wherever Goodfellow can lawfully supply, subject to the sanctions and export-control checks described in the rules. Your supervisor must agree to your entry and to being named on it.

Your research must feature a material that Goodfellow supplies. You can have bought it from any supplier, and where it came from has no effect on judging. No purchase is necessary, and entry is free.

How entries are judged

Entries are reviewed by a panel of Goodfellow technical specialists and an independent judge, who will be named on this page before any entry is shortlisted or scored. Each entry is scored equally on four criteria. Finalists present online and answer questions from the panel.

Scientific quality

Rigour of the method and the results.

Role of the material

How central the material is to the work, and how well its use is understood.

Potential impact

How far the work could be applied or deployed beyond the lab.

Communication

How clearly the poster tells the story.

Meet the judges

The panel brings together Goodfellow technical specialists and an independent judge.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to buy from Goodfellow to enter?

No. Entry is free and no purchase is necessary. Your research only needs to feature a material that Goodfellow supplies, bought from any supplier.

How do I find the right catalogue material?

Search the Goodfellow product finder by material name, for example titanium foil or alumina rod. Enter the material name or product code in the form. The material can have come from any supplier. If you are unsure, use live chat on this page and our team will help.

Who counts as an early-career researcher?

PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, research students and other early-career researchers registered at or employed by a university or publicly funded research institution on the closing date. Master's students undertaking experimental research may also enter. Goodfellow decides eligibility by applying the criteria in the rules.

Can I enter a poster I have already presented elsewhere?

Yes, if it was presented or prepared for presentation in the 24 months before the closing date. Posters must be in English.

Can I enter a co-authored poster?

Yes, group work is encouraged. Name your co-authors on the form, but only those who have agreed to be named and to their names and institutions being shared with Goodfellow.

What happens if I am shortlisted?

The judges shortlist on merit as entries arrive, so early entries can be shortlisted before the deadline. Shortlisted entrants receive a digital badge and are asked for a 2-minute video about their research and some extra information, including contact details for their head of department and their institution's procurement or finance contact, by 18 December 2026. Up to 10 finalists are then chosen in January 2027 to give a 15-minute online presentation. Finalists must pass eligibility and compliance checks and complete a written End User Statement. Entrants and their institutions are screened before shortlisting; finalists, their supervisors, co-authors and institutions are screened again before finalists are selected and before any prize is awarded.

How are prizes awarded?

Prizes are Goodfellow material credit for the winner's Institution, for the benefit of its department or research group, used under the institution's own rules. The institution will be asked to set Goodfellow up as a supplier on its systems and to sign Goodfellow's Prize Acceptance Agreement. Supplier set-up is an administrative step so that orders can be placed against the credit; it is not a condition of winning and creates no purchase obligation. Credit must be ordered within 12 months, import duties and local taxes are the institution's responsibility, and goods are delivered only to the institution's own premises. Full details are in the terms and conditions.

What do you do with my poster and personal data?

We use your details to run the competition, deliver prizes and publicise results. We send you marketing only if you opt in on the entry form. Contact details you give us for supervisors, co-authors, heads of department and procurement contacts are used only to administer the competition, verify eligibility and deliver prizes. If you are shortlisted, we will ask for your separate consent before we publish your poster, abstract, video, name, institution or photograph, and you can withdraw it at any time. See the competition privacy notice.
